“You will love the ocean. It makes you feel small, but not in a bad way. Small because you realize you’re part of something bigger.” – Lauren Myracle

We are the BBNJ Youth Network -

An International Treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) is currently discussed at the United Nations. This Treaty covers the High Seas (the ocean beyond countries’ national waters) which cover 48% of the planet. The final Treaty, due to be signed in 2021, will create a new series of future conferences aiming at sustainably managing and conserving the High Seas. There has been no youth engagement in the BBNJ process to date, and stakeholder engagement is not mentioned as part of future conferences.

The BYN’s main aim is to ensure youth participation in the BBNJ process, including future conferences.

The BBNJ Youth Network (BYN) is an emerging group of young people who share the vision of an inclusive youth-led constituency for the BBNJ Treaty, equivalent to what already exists for other UN fora such as for climate (YOUNGO) and biodiversity (GYBN).

We are not representing any existing organisations or groups and are here to give a space for youth voice to be expressed and listened to in processes that will affect the youngest generations the most.

BYN is also a place to build capacity for youth in the BBNJ process. The Network will provide a space for youth to learn more about the BBNJ process and the high seas in general.
