WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE YOUTH?

So far, there has been no youth involvement in the Treaty process and we, as the BBNJ Youth Network, want to remedy that. If the High Seas are to be governed by all countries, their management will affect all generations. The High Seas cover almost half of the planet, hold an impressive diversity and abundance of life, and are critical in absorbing the carbon dioxide we emit. However, humans are now threatening the integrity and resilience of the High Seas through changes in ecosystems induced by climate-change, overfishing and pollution, that will disproportionately impact the lives of future generations. Therefore, it is critical that youth voices be included and listened to in the discussions deciding on how the High Seas should be managed. Youth understand the risks posed to our future livelihoods, are key stakeholders to build capacity across generations, and will bring forward-thinking recommendations to the BBNJ Treaty.
