In April 2018, governments of the world started negotiating a new Treaty under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, also known as the High Seas. This Treaty will be legally binding and target the protection of marine biodiversity within the High Seas specifically. The final session of the negotiation is scheduled for August 2021.
